The multitude of those in need of copper pipe repair all over the country would suggest that copper pipes are not immune to the corrosion and buildup of sediments that cause leaks and restricted water flow, as was previously thought. Premature failure of copper pipes is causing the need for pipe repairs and/or repiping as early as two years after installation.
Copper pipe repairs such as patches and wraps can stave off the need for repiping for a while, but eventually, it will become more cost effective to repipe than to continue the piecemeal pipe repairs necessitated by the corroded copper pipes. Often a plumber will recommend repiping a house after its fourth leak.
The problem with repiping is that it is invasive, time consuming, messy, and expensive because in order to replace all of the pipes in a house, the plumber has to tear down walls and sometimes pull up floors (including concrete slabs) to do the pipe repairs. Because of this, many people seek out an alternative method of repairs for copper pipes.
One alternative method for pipe repairs for copper pipes is the ACE Duraflo system that is able to dry, clean, and coat the inner walls of the pipes as a means of making pipe repairs. The system uses a small high-pressure hose powered by a special compressor to blow filtered, heated, dry air through to pipes to dry them, which is an important step in pipe repairs. In order to clean the sediments out of the pipes (experts considered this to be impossible until now) the compressor powers a mixture of corundum (an abrasive mineral noted by its hardness) and air through the pipes. Once the pipes are free of sediments, the compressor uses its power to coat all of the inner walls of the pipes in the system with an epoxy barrier, which not only makes the pipe repairs, but also prevents the further need for pipe repairs on the copper pipes.
